Seventeen percent of sea otters die from brain disease caused by a single-cell deadly parasite,
Toxoplasma gondii. For eons, this parasite has moved mostly without notice among animals, including humans, on land. But now, it is migrating to the sea, where it is infecting mammals, including sea otters, whose immune systems are unprepared for the assault.
